The Louisville Committee on Foreign Relations is pleased to announce our speaker for January, Dr. Joshua Goldstein, who will address the topic of his acclaimed new book Winning the War on War: The Decline of Armed Conflict Worldwide (Dutton/Penguin, 2011). This is the first in our annual Lee Thomas Peace Lecture series.

Dr. Goldstein is one of the world’s leading specialists on international relations. His textbook International Relations (with Jon C. Pevehouse) is now in its 10th edition and has been used by over half a million college students during the past 18 years. His book War and Gender: How Gender Shapes the War System and Vice Versa (Cambridge University Press, 2001) won the International Studies Association’s “Book of the Decade” award. The Real Price of War (New York University Press, 2004) discusses war and the economy. Prior books include Three-Way Street: Strategic Reciprocity in World Politics (Chicago, 1990, with John Freeman), and Long Cycles: Prosperity and War in the Modern Age (Yale, 1988).

Dr. Goldstein has published articles in the American Political Science Review, International Studies Quarterly, and Journal of Conflict Resolution, among others. His op-ed articles have appeared in the New York Times, Washington Post, and elsewhere. He has been interviewed on CNN, NBC, ABC Nightline, NPR, BBC, NHK, and many other radio and television outlets. His research on great-power management of conflicts, which includes studies of the Middle East, Bosnia and Kosovo, has been funded by the National Science Foundation. Goldstein has won a MacArthur Foundation Individual Research Grant, the International Studies Association’s Karl Deutsch Award, and the American Political Science Association’s Victoria Schuck Award, among others.

In addition to his 18 years at American University, Dr. Goldstein has held positions at Yale, the University of Massachusetts, Brown University, and the University of Maryland. Additional information may be found at his website,joshuagoldstein.com
